Supporting Young People Aged 12–25

Young people can access support through our Youth Homelessness Service, which assists individuals aged 12 to 25 years. The service is delivered through three key programs designed to meet young people at different stages of need:

  • Early Intervention and Prevention

  • Crisis Refuge

  • Intensive Support Program

A Young Person’s Journey to Safety and Confidence

Finding Safety and Opportunity

Last year, CORE Community Services provided refuge to a 17-year-old young man experiencing extensive family violence due to his differences. Fearful of living openly as himself, he found safety and acceptance within our refuge.

During his time with CORE, he embraced the opportunities available to him. He completed a TAFE course in beauty therapy, made possible through access to funding for a makeup kit and English tutoring support. He also explored his creativity by creating videos and practising photography.

Emotional Support and Personal Growth

The young man attended fortnightly sessions with our on-site psychologist, where he was able to explore his emotions in a safe and supportive environment. Over time, his confidence grew, and he felt empowered to fully embrace his identity, including changing his name.

He was also connected with an LGBTQI transitional service to support his longer-term housing needs and social inclusion.

Building a Future

He had the opportunity to perform alongside singer Sam Smith at the Mardi Gras parade, marking a powerful milestone in his journey. Today, he is employed in retail and runs a beauty-focused YouTube channel featuring makeup tutorials.

He speaks very highly of his time at CORE Community Services and has since referred a friend to access support.

The Role of Employment in Long-Term Stability

Employment confidence plays a critical role in supporting young people experiencing homelessness. Access to education, skills development, and employment significantly increases the likelihood of maintaining long-term housing and achieving overall wellbeing.
