Blog: My Life as a New Migrant

Adapting to a new culture and learning a new language is a challenge that almost all migrants face. Like starting anew, one must learn to speak, walk, act, and fit in, while also preserving cultural traditions and meeting family expectations. This process requires time, effort, an open mindset, and support from the community to navigate basics such as public transport, banking, schooling, and government services.

Moving from Syria to Australia

Five years ago, my family and I moved from Syria to Australia, a transition that required rapid adaptation to a new lifestyle. While excited about living in a safe country full of opportunities, fear of the unknown was ever-present. We settled in Fairfield, an area with a strong Middle Eastern migrant community, which helped my parents feel welcomed.

However, not speaking English and being unfamiliar with Australian systems made it difficult to:

  • Access essential services and information

  • Find employment

  • Establish new connections and join communities

  • Reconnect with extended family

  • Apply for official documents

We quickly realized we needed guidance to survive and build a future in Australia.

Discovering CORE Community Services

During my first school break, a neighbour introduced me to CORE, sharing a flyer in Arabic. Using Google Translate, I discovered a range of activities such as drawing workshops, swimming lessons, and visits to the Australian Museum. With help from Fairfield residents, I learned how to get to the CORE office.

At CORE, I found a welcoming and understanding environment. Many staff were migrants themselves, speaking my language and sharing similar experiences, which made me feel safe and comfortable. CORE provided information about youth services, aged care, NDIS, preschool programs, and community hubs.

Benefiting from CORE’s Programs

My family accessed NDIS and youth services, which were particularly impactful. Youth services helped me form friendships and connections during my teenage years, one of the most important stages of my life. CORE became a sanctuary where I could speak my mind, seek advice, and find the support I needed.

Giving Back: Volunteering at CORE

Today, I am a volunteer in CORE’s Marketing and Communications Department. I am proud to contribute to an organisation that supported me during one of my most challenging times and continues to empower migrants and their families.
